Advanced Features and How they Help

Hearing instrument manufacturers have made some dramatic improvements in technology recently. When you try a new hearing instrument today, we think you will be pleasantly surprised by the small size, automatic features and how well you will be hearing. Here are a few examples of the technology that today’s hearing aids are able to take advantage of.

Environmental detection and adaptation:

This system classifies different sound environments and makes automatic adjustments to the frequency response and characteristics of the instrument to help you hear throughout the day. All of the changes are made automatically without any button pushing or fiddling with a volume control. If you go from a quiet environment, to a loud environment the instrument will turn itself down without you having to think about it.

Automatic directional microphones:

This feature enables the hearing instrument to enable or disable a directional microphone as your listening environment changes without requiring you to press a button. Imagine you and a friend are carrying on a conversation as you walk down the sidewalk to your favorite coffee shop. However, once you enter the crowded coffee shop the amount of background noise increases dramatically. Your hearing instruments detect the increase in background noise and enable the directional microphones and your conversation continues uninterrupted and without you having to press buttons or change a volume control.

Automatic telephone response:

Modern hearing instruments have the ability to detect the presence of a telephone receiver as you put it up to your ear. Older hearing instruments used to whistle when you put the phone up to your ear or else you had to remember to push a button to get to the telephone program or turn the volume control down or even just take the hearing aid out of your ear. This is no longer the case. When you put the phone up to your ear the hearing instrument will automatically adjust to the telephone without whistling. So the next time when you just make it to the phone before it stops ringing and you pick up the phone and say “hello” you will hear the person that is calling you clearly and comfortably without having to think about your hearing aid.

Feedback Canceller:

One of the biggest complaints people have had about hearing instruments is feedback, or whistling. With new hearing instruments this problem has been virtually eliminated. If you have ever given someone a hug only to have both of you startled when your hearing aid whistled, then you will really appreciate this feature.
